To begin with, in this section you will start by hearing how the individual letters of the Sinhala Hodiya (සිංහල හෝඩිය) - the Sinhala Alphabet - are pronounced.

Click on any letter below to hear what it sounds like.

It doesn't matter if you don't recognise what the letters are just yet. The goal in this very first lesson, (as well as in following 2-3 lessons) is to help your ear become familiar with the sounds of Sinhala.

Later, when you have gone further down the road in your Sinhala lessons, you will find that you are able to recognise the letters found below. For now, the goal is to take you in an easy step-by-step manner through this initial learning process.

So, to that end - you will first hear the name of the letter being spoken, then you will hear the actual sound of the letter. This will be followed by a short pause for you to repeat the sound you have just heard.

For example:

'Ah' ..... 'Ah' yanna ..... 'Ah'

('අ' ..... 'අ' යන්න ..... 'අ' )

To make it easier for you to learn you will need to repeat the sound out loud. This is so that your tongue will get used to the pronounciation.

When you have repeated the sound, you will find that the sound is once again repeated by us so that you can hear what it again.

Listen to the sound of each letter as many times as you like so that you become familiar with it.
