In this, the very first ‘Kiyanna’ section, you will learn the very first word that just about all infants learn – the Sinhala word for Mother. We felt this to be a fitting start to learning how to speak Sinhala.

We have introduced you to a total of 4 words in this first lesson. This is so that you can first learn to recognize the some of the sounds of the Sinhala language, much in the same way that we introduced you to listening to the first four letters of the Sinhala Hodiya (සිංහල හෝඩිය) – Sinhala alphabet – in the very first Ahanna (අහන්න) section.

In the following lessons, we will introduce you to words that will help you to carry on a conversation in Sinhala, but for now first learn to say –

Ah-Mm-Ma

(අ-ම්-මා)

If you are learning Sinhala for the very first time, then you will not recognize the words – in fact they will most likely look like gibberish to you!

Don’t worry – the idea here is for you to get your ear accustomed to hearing the sounds of Sinhala, and for your tongue to get used to speaking the words like a Sinhala native. You will be able to learn how each word is written later, as you progress further.

(To get a better idea on how our lessons page works, and to be able to understand the method behind the seeming madness - go here.)

Just click on any one of the words within the boxes to hear the word being spoken.

Each word is first spoken at a normal speaking rate, followed by a pause for you to repeat the word; it is then spoken by us again, this time in an exaggerated slower manner so that you can catch the sounds and put them together properly.

Again, there is a small pause for you to repeat the sound – in exactly the same slow manner – before the word is once again repeated by us. This is so that you can get a good grasp on what the word sounds like without getting confused! (If you have any comments, criticisms or confusion about anything please feel free to contact us. We are waiting to help you.)

For example:

Amma ..... Ah-Mm-Ma .....Amma

(අම්මා ..... අ-ම්-මා ..... අම්මා)

And below each word you will find that the meaning of each word is also available to be heard with the click of a button.

Listen to each word as many times as you wish – in fact, the more you listen, the easier it will become for you to learn to speak Sinhala.
