Why SihaDerana
Society today is breaking down. This of course is very clearly visible in the Sri Lankan society. The youth are dissatisfied with the system and are revolting. There is no self- discipline on ones actions. There is no self respect or respect for others, or their life or property.
Thievery and crime are on the increase. Misuse of drugs is on the increase and is becoming a way of living. There is no safety for anyone to living a life of freedom. Women and children and the elders are at the receiving end of violence and cruelty. Teenage gangs are quite visible “ruling” the neighborhoods and they are becoming a threat to anyone in the society.
Law and order is finding itself inadequate and unable to bring these occurrences under control. The ones with power make use of their power to suppress others and to further their own ends. Terrorism has found itself to be the order of the day, as ones with power inflict terror on others. In effect, the discipline and the order in the society, is very visibly becoming non-existent.
There is now a clear need for a society where one can live a life of freedom, peace and prosperity without hindrance from others, where one can live and die peacefully. What is written here is only the essence of what can be written into volumes of books. We at SihaDerana believe that what is needed now is an initiative; that can bring about a long lasting solution to emerge, which can help bring about necessary transformations in society, instead of just writing or talking about them.
There will be several different ideologies to handling such a situation. The dissatisfied youth may take the path of revolution. The ones holding power may take the path of becoming the “Big Brother” wielding its “bullying” power to control the others.
Our Initiative
We believe that whatever the solution is, it has to come from the society and result unconditionally in absolute freedom to each and every individual born into the society without any discrimination whatsoever.
We believe in treating the cause of the problem and not try to control the symptoms.
We believe the fundamental cause for the current situation is the gradual breakdown overtime of self-discipline of the individuals.
To bring about any transformation, the society must realize this degradation of its order. It must introduce ways and means of living in an ordered society, without being subject to harsh controls.
To achieve this, the individuals need to be directed to a more self disciplined and righteous path.
This of course implies education with a difference. Education and adult re-education with a firm direction to self-discipline, respect to self and others, would provide the solution to treat the cause of this problem, and put the society on a path to be an ordered and civilized one.
We at SihaDerana firmly believe in all of these, hence, we are in the process of making this our Initiative, introducing these concepts of self-discipline into the Sri Lankan society, quite openly for the world at large to see, through this our website. Our initiative is to setup educational and Knowledge Enhancement facilities (link to university) adhering to the principles of the self-disciplined ways of the Sri Lankan, Sinhala Bauddha – සිංහල බෞද්ධ – civilization.
