Sinhala Raja Vanshaya
The Sinhala Raja Vanshaya - සිංහල රාජවංශය - is the lineage or succession of the Royalty of the Sinhala State and of the Sinhala People. It spans back to pre-historic times.
Here we present to you some of the facts spanning over the past 2500 years relating to the roots of our Sinhala civilization. If you are a Sinhala, you may already be aware of some aspects of these, our heritage, which makes us so proud to be Sinhala.
Some of the dates stated may vary by a few years from what are stated by some other authors.
Our research has shown that some that some of the facts have been blurred with the passage of time. However, by and large the essence has been well documented throughout the past 2500 years.
We have also noted that the books written recently, i.e. over the past 50 years or so can not be relied upon for facts. There seems to have been attempts to alter the documented history by modern authors - for whatever reason unknown to us - personal gains and or recognition. We continue to carry out our research into these, and will correct any errors if and when we uncover such.
At the start we give only the names and the period of each reign. As our research progresses we plan to present to you the significant facts during the reign of each of the Royalty.
We give here the names in Sinhala writing as well, for the benefit of anyone who knows to read Sinhala. We find that sounds in Sinhala cannot be truly be represented in the English language, giving rise to lots of mispronunciations.
Also note: that for a period of 2359 years, no power in the world was able to conquer the Sinhala people or their royalty, not even the might of the different empires of the Western world made a difference. It withstood many an effort to batter it down, until internal splits and dissension reared its ugly head as a result of the marriage of the Sinhala royalty to the Tamil royalty. From this point it was the end of the Sinhala Royalty's succession to the Throne - it also paved the way for foreign powers to lay siege to our lands.
