SihaDerana: Sri Lanka and Theravada Buddhism - Culture
...Together we can make the difference

We firmly believe that every single individual can help, even in their own small way, to form an unstoppable force for a brighter more prosperous future in Sri Lanka.

Sinhala Culture

Sri Lanka, the jewel of the Indian Ocean, could be considered very much a jewel-in-the-rough by many people. This however, is not entirely true. There are many facets to Sri Lanka which are not always readily noticeable, but which are there nonetheless for anyone who wishes to look.

Sri Lanka is a very special place on this earth. This specialty arises from the people and the specialty of the people arises from the land. It is a mutually supportive role, which supports and nourishes all.

Take a closer look at the Sinhalese New Year and the traditions, culture and history related to this important part of Sinhala life.

The people of Sri Lanka are a collection of very individual human beings. A very strong civilization, which exists for the ease and contented living of the people, has kept these individuals bound together into one collection through millennia after millennia.

This binding force is the Sinhala Civilization, and it exists today intact, the same as it did all those many thousands of years ago. We the Sinhala are very proud of our heritage and value it above all else.

The source of this strength you will find comes from our hearts, which in turn is intrinsically linked to the Gama (the village), the Pansala (the Buddhist temple), and the Pasala (the school). These three things combine together to make our strength, and to forge each individual in to what they are, individuals with a mind of their own.

You will find that equality of the sexes has been a staple of Sinhala life all throughout its long history. Discrimination, job- and work-structuring for men and women did not exist until very recently when outside influences washed upon our shores.

Our traditions and customs are what makes us, the Sinhala people, unique.
