Sri Lankan History

Sri Lanka, as it is now known, and Lanka, as it was known in the days of yore, has a fascinating and interesting history that spans over million of years. Of these however, only the last 2551 have been well documented. The rest we know of through various literatures which have filtered down through the ages, as well as the last 35,000 years through archeological findings.

As now, Sri Lanka in the past was primarily agricultural based, but unlike now, Lanka in the days gone by was a well developed and technologically advanced society, able to accomplish feats of engineering which can only now be appreciated.

A look at the prehistory and history of Sri Lanka...

The beginning of this recent history starts then, one fateful day when an Aryan prince of the Sakya dynasty by the name of Vijaya was exiled from his homeland along with seven hundred of his cohorts.

They were put to sea to find their destiny and, as chance would have it, they sighted the golden shores of Lanka. Weighing anchor they set foot on the sandy beaches of Lankaand were immediately captured and imprisoned by Lankas native population.

Prince Vijaya, single handedly fought and released his cohorts from their imprisonment. Soon after this he managed to capture the powers of Lanka and took over the kingdom, to become ruler of Lanka.

King Vijaya then set about settling in with the inhabitants of Lanka and carving out a great kingdom, the first capital of which was Anuradhapura. Within short order he had established a kingdom that was to be the forerunner of many great kingdoms to come.

This was the birth of the Sinhala as we know them today, and this was the birth of Sinhala history as we know it today. Since then King after King went on to develop Lanka to become one of the greatest civilizations in the world, unparalleled even now, in its technological feats.
